4.1 The HIPAA Security Rule

The HIPAA Security Rule came into force in 2005 to safeguard the confidentiality of electronic PHI. It implemented the protections contained in the HIPAA Privacy Rule by addressing the possible safeguards covered entities should consider to secure a patient’s electronic PHI.
