4.2 Barriers to Palliative Care

The medical care of individuals with dementia is complicated by several issues, including

  • Advanced age
  • Problems with communication
  • Cognitive decline
  • Functional decline
  • Diminished capacity to manage daily living activities.

Patients with dementia are more likely to have coexisting, age-related chronic conditions that call for daily treatment, many of which have negative cognitive effects.
