5.3.1 Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of cybersecurity attack. It is used by criminals to attack and restrict access to PHI. It is done by encrypting the data with a key known only to the cybercriminal.

The cybercriminal then demands or asks for a ransom in exchange for access to the information. As a result, the only way to get back access to the data is by paying the ransom to the criminal.

If the payment is made, a decryption key is given to the user to access the information. However, in other cases, the criminal may destroy the data as well.
