6.3.1 Physical Safeguards

Physical safeguards include physical protections put in place for the protection of electronic systems and patient data. By implementing these safeguards, the safety of PHI can be ensured, and access to the unauthorized workstation can be limited.

Through the implementation of physical safeguards, the PHI of a patient can be appropriately moved with protection. An example of this could be a policy introduced by an entity that does not allow employees to take work laptops home. These policies can protect PHI from being shared and disclosed to the public.

Facility Control

Through facility control, the access to buildings where a patient’s PHI is used can be limited.

Workstation Security

Workstation security can secure work computers and all other devices that possess the data of a patient.
