6.4.1 Technical Safeguards

Technical safeguards can be described as implementing technical policies and procedures for computing systems. Through this safeguard, access to the PHI of a patient can be restricted to only authorized individuals.

People who have access to the PHI are required to have an ID. Once this ID is created, the individual accessing the data of the PHI can be monitored. So, the activities of employees within an entity can be tracked.

A technical safeguard also requires updating the systems within an entity. A fully updated system will be more reliable, and monitoring the PHI will be easier.

The PHI data should not be left unattended. For this reason, updates should be made within a system that allows the system to automatically log out after a certain amount of time has passed.

Other than this, the encryption and decryption of PHI are required by the Security Rule.
